Rack PDUs
A rack power distribution unit (PDU) takes power from the UPS or wall circuit and distributes it to the equipment in the rack. The right PDU matches the circuit (for example 208V 30A), the plug, and the outlet types (C13 and C19).
- Basic: power distribution with no monitoring
- Metered: a local display of total load
- Monitored: load readings over the network
- Switched: remote on/off control of individual outlets

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a metered and a switched PDU?
A metered PDU shows the total power draw so you can avoid overloading a circuit. A switched PDU adds remote control of individual outlets, so a device can be power-cycled without a site visit.
What is a 0U PDU?
A 0U PDU mounts vertically in the back of a rack, so it does not use any of the rack units (U) needed for equipment.
What size server rack do I need?
42U is the most common size. Taller racks (45U or 48U) fit more equipment in the same floor space, and deeper racks fit long servers and cable management.
